If you look at Ponemon’s chart above, you can see that a lost laptop will cost less than $3,735 in 75% of cases. In fact, the average derived from the middle 50% of data (from the 25th percentile to the 75th) is $2,838. So, while the $49,246 is the mathematical average, it is not the actual cost that you would expect if you were to lose a laptop. The $49,246 average cost is overstated.

The average is simultaneously understated when you consider the outliers. If the wrong laptop is stolen at exactly the wrong time, by the wrong person, the cost can be much, much higher. Larry Taylor, Travelex’s former CEO Americas, had just such an experience in 2005.

His company issued prepaid cards that were loaded and could be reloaded, with foreign currencies. They were very successful too, scaling up to over 50,000 users. However, the issue arose when the employee of a vendor, which they were using to process all of the payments, had his car stolen. In the trunk of his car was his corporate laptop. Suddenly, the personal financial information of their 50,000 clients was compromised. They had to act fast.

Customers had to be notified and compensated for any direct inconveniences that they encountered, cards had to be canceled and new ones were printed and mailed. A lot of the goodwill and trust that had been earned eroded in a second.

The worst cost of all, however, came from the legal and regulatory fees they encountered. Questions arose regarding who would pay for everything, especially the costs that arose downstream with some of TravelEx’s corporate clients. Lawyers had to get involved, and this drove up the cost dramatically.

Security might just be the biggest advantage of Pure Desk™. 256-bit encryption protects your hard drive, and available dual-factor authentication will ensure that only your users access their accounts. If your devices are frequently leaving the office, don’t worry about them getting lost, and what that might cost you. We can immediately wipe any device that is reported missing, and a new computer will arrive at your door the next day, with all programs and files just as you left them.

User standardization is another great advantage, allowing you to control how your employees share and save documents, which programs they have access to, and ensure that everyone is upgrading their computers in tandem. Controlling permissions across any of your business applications is as easy as a click of a button. It’s a central hub for your entire digital identity. After considering Help Desk and Desk Side support, an Office 365 license, the cost of a softphone, and the risk costs that a potentially lost laptop poses, our clients have seen an average cost reduction of 41%.

Your employees are your biggest IT threat

Some employees may not know how to protect themselves online, which can put your business data at risk,” says Bill Carey from Roboform. And he’s right, a phishing attempt sent to just 10 people will gain access 90% of the time.

The Billion Dollar Lost Laptop, is it true?

That’s not the only fearful stat. The Ponemon Institute and Intel recently published a study that declared the average cost of a lost laptop to be $49, 246 and called it the Billion Dollar Lost Laptop Problem.

Initially, we didn’t believe it, and decided to take a closer look at how they calculated this figure.

The figure is simultaneously overstated and understated. The typically lost laptop will cost around $2,600, far below Ponemon’s quoted average. However, the outlying cases were far more extreme than the $49,000 average, mounting into the hundreds of thousands and even millions of dollars.

It’s amazing how something like this can turn a successful business on it’s head in a single moment. Dealing with this problem consumed my next several months; I was able to focus on almost nothing else. When the fire finally died down more than $2M had walked out the door. I would have given anything to be able to just zap that information out of existence before it was compromised.

Larry Taylor, TravelEx CEO Americas

While the $49,246 average is unbelievable, remember that it exists as both an understatement and an overstatement. So long as you are able to protect your data, ensure proper employee behavior, and have the option of a remote data wipe, you can keep all lost laptop cases to a reasonable figure.
