Where oh where has the time gone? It’s been a while since our last news roundup post. We’re trying to think of new, creative things we can do with this blog — have suggestions? send us a message! — so in the meantime, let’s go with what works.

Here’s this week’s roundup of technology news:

SOPA & PIPA anti-piracy bills stopped by Congress
“U.S. lawmakers halted controversial anti-piracy legislation Friday, delivering a stunning victory for websites like Wikipedia that staged an unprecedented online protest this week to try and kill the bills.” - Financial Post

SOPA & PIPA protests: “A political coming-of-age for tech industry”
“With a Web-wide protest on Wednesday that includes a 24-hour shutdown of the English-language Wikipedia, the legislative battle over two Internet piracy bills has reached an extraordinary moment — a political coming of age for a relatively young and disorganized industry that has largely steered clear of lobbying and other political games in Washington.” – New York Times

BlackBerry PlayBook back on sale for consumers + businesses
“Anyone looking to purchase the 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB PlayBook can pick one up for $299 between January 9 and February 4. RIM is offering even steeper discounts to businesses that want to order more than 100 PlayBooks.” – InformationWeek

“Sweden dealt a symbolic blow to the global fight against digital music and film piracy by recognizing a group that promotes file-sharing across the Internet as a religion. One of the most wired nations in the world, Sweden has long been a battleground between those who support file-sharing and the music and film industry. The Nordic state gave birth to the world’s largest filesharing website, Pirate Bay.” – Ottawa Citizen

Earlier this week, Channel Buzz writer Robert Dutt sat down with Quartet president Rob Bracey to discuss the acquisition of KLM Solutions. The interview offers a candid look into Quartet’s evolution as a comprehensive IT service provider.

The challenge was that historically, Quartet had essentially put up with doing hardware to facilitate services – and Bracey realized the company would have to change the way it thought about hardware to maximize the opportunity. What better way to do that than to come together with a hardware-focused VAR. The goal, Bracey said, to create a more “balanced service provider” business for the combined entity. - Channel Buzz

I am delighted to announce the merger between Quartet Service Inc. and KLM Solutions Ltd. We see so many benefits for not only our two companies, but, most importantly, for our clients.

I am delighted to announce the merger between Quartet Service Inc. and KLM Solutions Ltd.

At first blush, you may wonder why a services business like Quartet, with so much invested in the Cloud, would be hooking up with an IT hardware products and solutions provider.

But that is the primary reason: the Cloud is actually what got Kent Leckie, KLM’s President and owner, and I initially talking about this merger almost two years ago. We see so many benefits for not only our two companies, but, most importantly, for our clients.

Cloud computing is real and here to stay, but so is hardware, which is not going to all of a sudden disappear. Hardware’s death is greatly exaggerated. Companies are simply not moving their entire infrastructure to the Cloud. On premise equipment plays an important role now and going forward.

The combined strengths of Quartet’s service experience and KLM’s product expertise are a perfect match. You might say this is a marriage made in the Cloud, or, more specifically, the Hybrid Cloud.

We’re developing some creative in-house and hybrid cloud models that accelerate the traditional benefits of cloud computing. We’re happy to discuss these models and how one can be tailored to your needs to save your organization money.

As you’ll see, there are many reasons for the popularity of hybrid cloud computing, including security concerns, disaster recovery needs, capital efficiency, and the need to host some applications in house.

Simply put, hybrid cloud computing provides flexibility. It reduces costs without sacrificing performance and security.

Kent and I met through the VentureTech Network, where we’re both active members, and it was here that we started talking about this new, bold venture for both of our companies.

With KLM’s long-standing partnerships with manufacturers and Quartet’s service-oriented business model and its investment in a sophisticated private cloud, this merger just kept making more and more sense with each discussion.

It really is a case where two plus two equals five. We see our current clients utilizing KLM’s hardware and project expertise, while at the same time KLM’s clients leaning on Quartet’s experience to help them move towards cloud computing.

The Cloud may have sparked our talks initially, but the decision to merge and the ensuing benefits are crystal clear. I look forward to working with Kent and his KLM team in this new and exciting path to growth for Quartet.

Best Regards,

Rob Bracey

Stuart Robertson was a trusted member of our management team. He was determined and practical, bringing an unalienable level of professionalism to his work at Quartet.

For some of us, Stuart’s passing is the loss of a close friend – for many of us, it’s the loss of an experienced mentor. But for all of us, no matter the position, Stuart’s passing is the loss of a much-respected colleague and an important part of our team.

Our thoughts, and our hearts, go out to Stuart’s friends and family, as well as to the friends and family of everyone that lost their lives in the crash.
